Info

- 2 ½ cups Honey
- 1 cup Water
- 1 cup Sugar
- ½ lb. Butter (2 cubes)
- ½ lb. chopped Almonds
- ½ lb. chopped Walnuts
- 2 Tbsp. finely chopped Citron (use flour to prevent stickiness)
|
- grated rind of two Lemons
- 1 tsp. Nutmeg
- ½ tsp. Cloves
- ½ tsp. Cinnamon
- 1 Tbsp. Baking Soda, dissolved in a little water
- ½ tsp. Oil of Anise *
- 12 cups Flour (approx.)
|

Boil the honey, water, sugar, and butter together. Let cool, then add the rest of the ingredients (put in the flour last). Roll dough out about to about ⅜" thick on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 350° for about 10-15 minutes, or until corners are slightly golden-brown. Cut into squares immediately. The dough may set for a day or two before baking if using white flour. Grandma Mabel Hagemeister (Gretchen's Mother's Mother) made this several weeks ahead to allow the flavors to age, but it tastes great fresh.

* Oil of Anise can sometimes be a difficult item to find in local stores; however it can often be found in specialty health food shops or online at Amazon.com.
